Chicago was home to nearly one million blacks at the time of this movement. Most of them were poor and lived in slum ghettos. African Americans were nothing to the whites, they had to battle their way through everything and had almost no rights at all. Chicago at this time was surrounded by anti slavery activity. Eventhough this was true almost all the schools around were still very racist and segregated. There was many activists in Chicago and always were protests everywhere you went. During marches there were whites that would disrupt and hurt talkers. For example, on one march Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was struck in the head with a big rock and also cars were overturned and burned which were owned to the movement activists. Blacks really fought for their rights and never gave up, sooner than later there was finally a law passed in about 1874 that allowed African Americans the right to vote and all equal rights with the whites. But just because the law was passed doesnt mean anyone followed it. African Americans were still treated with disrispect from almost all whites and were still segregated at restraunts and theaters and other activities.
